New venue! The singletrack at Jewell Park represents the fruit of much labor, thanks to Trails Have Our Respect, and the leadership of a few local legends and one relic (we'll let you decide which is which): Steve Jarrett, Kent McNeill, and Greg Shimonek. The Nebraska Lottery Psycowpath Series coordinators and friends have been enjoying the awesome singletrack at Jewell Park for a few years now, and we've been struggling with exactly how to bring its excitement to the racing masses... ya see, the trail is tight, and steep in some places, without much good opportunity for big groups or passing.... but it is a sweet trail. And you deserve to race it. So we give you.... a Time Trial!
A "time trial"? What's this all about?
Glad you asked. Folks, have you ever wondered how fast you could ride just one lap? Ever heard of the "race against the clock"? Friends, this is your opportunity. We've organized this the best way we know how in an attempt to give you that chance, an opportunity to fly through a tight course for just one lap, no one right in front of you, no one on your back wheel, just you, some remarkable singletrack, and that internal battle between your own ambition and your threshold for pain. To make it happen, some things are going to be different than what you've experienced in the past.
Every rider must register in ADVANCE, by Friday April 2 at 8pm. Do so here.
Why? Well, once we know exactly who/how many people are registered, we'll produce a "Start List" by 10pm Friday April 2nd, and publish it online and email it to you. It will list all riders, in order by category and by how well they raced last year, with an EXACT start time next to each name. The first rider will start at 11am, the next rider will start at 11:01, then 11:02, etc. So yes, there's a 1 minute interval between each racer. We need you to register in advance so we can create this list, and so that we can make sure you're not starting right in front of some super fast person, because otherwise she might catch you.
After you register online here, you'll want to check back to Psycowpath.com or NebraskaCyclingNews.com at 10pm Friday April 2 to download the Start List. That way you'll know exactly what time your individual race begins. Show up about 1 hour (or earlier!) before that race so you have plenty of time to get ready, pay your entry, get your race plate/bib number, and sign your waiver! All racers MUST sign their waiver at least 30 minutes prior to the start of their event!
Results will be posted after all racers are done... where you'll be able to compare YOUR finish time with others in your typical category, and see how you stack up! This is the first opportunity to earn points towards the Nebraska Lottery Psycowpath Series Championship, so make it count!
Series points will be awarded for this event based the same way there are calculated for all other events.... ie, just because this race is shorter doesn't make it any less meaningful than the other events for accumulating points!!
Entry Fees... a little lower than normal!
- First race ever? Just five bucks.
- Juniors & Cat 3: $10
- Singlespeed & Cat 2: $15
- Cat 1: $20
We recognize that your racing experience at this time trial probably won'tbe as long as your typical racing experience. And even though most of our hosting expenses are static, we're still dropping our entry fees slightly to accomodate. Because, well, we hope that you'll really come out and give this a shot. Similarly, cash payout to Cat 1 is slightly reduced, and gift certificates and/or medals to other categories is the same as other events.
Prizes!
Cat 1 Men Five Places: Cash $75, 50, 40, 30, 20.
Cat 1 Women Three Places: Cash $50, 30, 20.
Cat 2, Cat 3, & Juniors : Gift Certificates and/or medals at least 3 deep in each category.
The Course:
Jewell Park is the perfect name for this trail. It is a jewel, alright. That is if you like roller coasters. Nestled in the hilly neighborhoods around the well known Fontenelle Forest, Jewell Park will work your quads right off the start line. The course is short on distance but not on fun. It rolls up and down the entire length like an elongated pump track. Lots of power climbs and switch backs are rewarded with whippy g-outs and quick descents. It's not for the faint of heart or lungs.
The Venue:
Jewell Park is a combination of things. It's not only a bike park but it's also a dog park. There is a huge fenced-in area to keep Fido in check while you race. But that's about it. There are no bathrooms or running water. A porta potty will be available on race day. And please be sensitive about your trash. We want to be welcomed back so respect that this is someone's neighborhood.
Directions:
Google maps link is here!
Take Hwy 75 to the Cornhusker Exit. Head east on Corhnhusker, which will turn into Harvell Dr, and eventually into S. Harvell Drive. Take this all the way to S. Franklin St. Take a hard left at the intersection and go to E. 13th Ave (you should see the cemetery that butts up against Jewell Park). At E. 13th Ave, go right down a steep hill to Main St. Take a left onto Main and go north until you see the Park entrance on the left.
